Frequently Asked Questions

Sourcing

Is your tallow grass-fed?

Our tallow is fine filtered and comes from cows that are pasture raised, and 100% grass-fed & finished.

Where do you get your tallow from?

We source our tallow from a processor that partners with small family farms across America that are committed to pasture-raised, hormone-free, antibiotic-free and chemical-free cows!

Are your ingredients organic?

Sourcing high quality ingredients that are free of pesticides, hormones and chemicals is of the highest priority for us at Haus Apothecary. We use USDA certified organic or pesticide-free grown ingredients in all of our products and clearly mark organic ingredients on our labels.

Tallow

What happens if my product melts?

Tallow melts at 85 degrees, it's one of the reasons our tallow butter melts right onto your skin! Fear not, melting does not change the effectiveness of our tallow products.

If you've found that the summer heat has gotten the best of your package and your tallow butter has melted you have a few options.

1) Place your melted tallow butter in the fridge so all of the fats solidify quickly, leaving you with a smooth texture once cooled. If you purchased a whipped butter, you will see that your jar is not as full as usual. This is due to the loss of air that has been whipped into the tallow.

2) If you want to bring back the icing-like texture, you can re-whip your tallow butter with a kitchen mixer to add the air back into it. This can be done by scooping out the tallow into a clean bowl and melting it over a pot of hot water. Once it is completely melted, place it in your fridge to let it cool. After it has solidified, you can whip it back into it's original glory with your mixer!

Why does my tallow feel harder than usual?

When tallow gets cold, it becomes more firm. If you prefer a softer product, keeping it somewhere, like in a warm bathroom, may do the trick. If you prefer a harder balm-like product, or if your product has melted, you can put it in the refrigerator to make it more firm. Some batches also may be harder than others. We strive to keep our products consistent but tallow is a natural product which means that factors that are out of our control, such as what the animal eats or what season it is, can change the texture of the product as well.

Why does my tallow look/feel different than last time?

Each batch of tallow butters and balms are unique. While we have a consistent way of creating each batch and strive to have product consistency across all of our products, we are unable to ensure an exact replication each time due to the handmade nature of our products. Differences in a cow’s diet can affect the firmness of our tallow even before we begin creating our products.

What about expiration dates?

We use shelf-stable ingredients that do not need preservatives, and while most products can last for a year or more we recommend using your products within six months. This is due to potential contamination and the ability for your product to develop mold if water is introduced. Because of this, it's important that you don't allow any water to enter your product and to not store it in a warm, moist place. If you see any black spots develop in your product, discontinue use. If your product has any black spots upon arrival, please contact us.

Is tallow a sustainable product?

Tallow is an incredibly sustainable skincare option! Tallow is a by-product of meat production that typically goes into the trash. Therefore, if you're eating animal meat, you might as well be making good use of the tallow!
